Louise Giovanelli

BritishBritish
, b. 1993

Louise Giovanelli's luminous paintings delicately bridge the gap between the traditional and the contemporary, drawing inspiration from both the Western art canon and modern popular culture. Her works, often characterized by an enigmatic and unsettling atmosphere, feature subjects carefully selected for their formal qualities, such as staged photographs, film stills, and sculptural or architectural elements. In "Host" (2020), Giovanelli reinterprets a detail from Fra Angelico's "The Mockery of Christ" (1440-41), replicating it across two nearly identical canvases—a technique she frequently employs. In other works, she explores repetition through her subjects, as seen in "Arena" (2020), where Alfred Hitchcock’s muse, Tippi Hedren, glances over her shoulder, and in "Cameo" (2020), where Hedren’s expression hovers between ecstasy and fear. For Giovanelli, painting becomes a means of visual deceleration, inviting viewers to engage with her work as a meditative experience.
