Lisa Brice, born in 1968 in Cape Town, South Africa, skillfully navigates the complex landscape of artistic creation, seamlessly oscillating between the realms of spontaneous drawing and figure painting. Her artistry unfolds through a dynamic exploration of various surfaces, including canvas and tracing paper, where she employs unexpected painting and printing techniques. Brice's creative process often involves the act of tracing, a method that propels her into a captivating repetition of motifs and figures within her works. These repetitions, at times biographical and at other times drawing from art history, reflect her fascination with the concept of iteration. As Brice eloquently expresses, "I am attracted to the idea of repetition, chasing that high, stories told and retold." In 2006, Brice unveiled her inaugural solo exhibition, "Night Vision," at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg. The collection delved into the uncertainties of childhood. Subsequently, in 2009, her solo exhibition "More Wood for the Fire" at the same gallery provided a nuanced exploration of her connection to the island of Trinidad. Her participation in the 2011 publication "Vitamin P2," Phaidon's significant anthology of international painting, further solidified her presence in the art world. In 2012, Brice presented "Throwing the Floor," a solo exhibition at Goodman Gallery in Cape Town. Following this, she showcased "Well Worn" at Goodman Gallery Johannesburg in 2015. In June 2016, her work was featured in the exhibition "Making & Unmaking" at Camden Art's Centre in London, curated by Duro Olowu. Brice achieved a significant milestone with her first solo museum exhibition in the UK at Tate Britain in 2018. The exhibition showcased large-scale paintings that engaged with the enduring art-historical tradition of the female nude. Currently residing and working in London, UK, Lisa Brice continues to captivate audiences with her innovative approach to artistic expression, seamlessly blending spontaneity with deliberate technique.
