Kotao Tomozawa

JapaneseJapanese
, b. 1999

Born in 1999 in Bordeaux, France, Kotao Tomozawa spent her early years in Paris before relocating to Japan in 2004. Currently a student at Tokyo University of the Arts, she is pursuing a major in oil painting and actively engaging in both solo and group exhibitions. Tomozawa's artistic essence lies in her distinctive portraits, which intricately blend slime-like textures and organic elements. Through her work, she masterfully captures the interplay of texture, translucency, and softness, making a lasting impression on anyone who beholds it. Tomozawa's creations hold a complex duality, juxtaposing extreme cruelty with profound gentleness. Her art condenses multiple layers of existence into a simplified yet impactful expression. Notably in 2019, she co-founded the art unit "Tororoen" alongside her mother, Mimiyo Tomozawa. Her creative prowess garnered recognition with the Kume Keiichiro Prize in 2019 and selection for the Art Plaza Grand Prize at the University of the Arts in 2020. Her artistry has graced major exhibitions, including "caché" and "Tagboat Artshow" (both held at Hankyu Men's Tokyo) in 2021, "remix" and "Pomme d'amour" (both hosted by 3331artschiyoda) in 2020, as well as "Pomme d'amour" (presented by mograg gallery) and "MIND THE GAP" (held at THE blank GALLERY).
